Wedding Pictures: Cheap Vs. Expensive

The Wedding Photography is arguably the most important aspect of the entire production, especially afterwards. So, what amount should you pay and how will that affect the quality?

So, you’ve seen a lot of wedding photography websites and, wow, is it ever confusing. You get the sense that every Tom, Dick & Harry has {purchased|bought} some gear, set-up a website and is open for business. The pictures usually look pretty good as does the website (though it’s probably a cheap template). And the cost is quite reasonable, starting as low as $750 for the whole.

Firstly, don’t become charmed with a seemingly creative wedding photographer because of their site. Understandably, they will display their best work, (ie) a selection from each wedding. Just remember, including guests, can take a few good pictures at a wedding, even with a point and shoot. Therefore, to get a proper idea of a photographer’s skill and approach ask to see two entire weddings. Six hundred pictures from one wedding will tell the true story.

Depending on your locale, the average cost for an experienced photographer will be around $2500 for the day. So, what will you get from an inexperienced photographer who might have less than 20 weddings under his belt and is charging around $1000? That’s not an easy question to answer. There are undoubtedly some excellent amateur shooters plying their trade. But they are few and far between. The best wedding photography is not easy. Experience matters and you only have one opportunity. It necessitates great interpersonal skills (some photographers should only take pictures of objects). It requires an understanding of timing and logistics with respect to the current situation. And while many artistic photographers denigrate wedding photography it needs a high degree of ability, often with little or no preparation time. A Professional Wedding Photographer will also have back-up equipment in case of technical problems. Most amateurs do not, which could be disastrous.

Then again, spending more on an experienced photographer does not necessarily produce great pictures. On the contrary, it’s best to do some research. What if they’ve become tainted with wedding photography and no longer put in the same effort as in the earlier part of their career? Go on forums and see if anyone is trashing about the wedding photographer(s) you want. You’ll read some alarming and/or crazy stories about photographers doing some outrageously inappropriate and slapdash things. In short, Do your due diligence.

Meanwhile, in this day and age of tricky economic times it’s understandable to pay less for wedding photography, but don’t forget that all that remains post-wedding are the pictures (and maybe video). If there are budgetary stumbling blocks it may behoove you to cut back in other areas.

In conclusion, if you’re a risk-taker, you’re on a tight budget and you’ve really checked things out, a cheaper photographer may do the trick. More often than not though, the saying, “you get what you pay for”, applies to wedding photography. So, if it’s in the budget, do your homework, get some referrals and spend more to get a professional. You’ll love yourself after.
