Photography – Tips For Still Photography Lighting Techniques
Taking a quality photo is an art. It is not just point and click. The perfect photo involves good lighting. Lighting has a lot to do not only with adding lights at proper angles but the camera that is used. There are many ways to use lighting apparatus depending on the goal of your photo. The purpose for the photo and knowing your subject will determine the kind of lighting you want to use for the perfect picture.
What does it mean to know the subject?
Stills can encompass many things or individuals. For instance, shooting a model in a high fashion situation you will definitely need to have plenty of light while taking a picture for a book cover of the author needs different kinds of lighting that will produce a dramatic image. Shooting a bowl of fruit or an automobile may require a combination of lighting like using spot lights for direct lighting and bank lights for a diffused type of light.
How can I make lighting more dramatic?
To create shadow effects, some photographers will use silver or white reflectors. Black will create shadows while white will absorb shadows. You can also change the angles of the lighting. A term in photography for using regular household bulbs for the lighting rather than the big florescent lamps is known as tungsten light. Most cameras that are on the market to be sold today are made for bright lights.
Positioning my lighting.
There are two types of set-ups that won’t require much set-up. The first set-up only requires two lights. One will be placed six feet from the object at a 45 degree angle. Light number two is going to be focused on the background. To make the model or the object of the photo stand out the background should be white which will visually separate the object from the background. The background will turn out gray, if you use anything other than white.
You can also try using one light pointed at the background and another light shooting through the umbrella. The umbrella creates overhead lighting with the box above the object or model. You may ask the model to hold a reflector to avoid unwanted shadows.
