Comedy Shows And Top Reviews From The Arts Desk

From a former duo now doing their own thing to a rising star from South Shields, there is a wealth of talent providing the laughs in the latest comedy shows reviewed on The Arts Desk.

South Shields comic Sarah Millican is currently on tour with Thoroughly Modern Millican, with a refreshingly lo-fi, informal chat of a show, which centres on domestic subjects, her own life experiences and sex. It is a highly thought-out and cleverly constructed show, with perfect comic timing, though it may seem thrown together and random. With arena shows no doubt just round the corner, she’s saucy, sweary but never vulgar, making her an irresistibly warm and life-affirming comic.

There was a distinct lack of material in Stewart Lee’s show this week at the Leicester Square Theatre but it became a superlative lesson in how to do great, understated stand-up comedy. Deconstructing his musings on Scooby-Doo and Islam, Lee demonstrated his particular talent for meta-comedy. Alongside his quiet yet cutting comments about fellow comedians and his traditional smattering of bourgeois literary and cultural references, it all added up to a five-star review.

Meanwhile Stewart Lee’s former comedy partner Richard Herring (on such comedy shows as ‘Fist of Fun’ and ‘This Morning with Richard Not Judy’) is on tour with his own brand of stand-up. Herring’s signature style is an irreverent but nerdy pedantry and rationalism that sometimes reaches surreal extremes.

The comic took the audience through his disastrous romantic history, including a hilarious section on his short-lived relationship with actress Julia Sawalha. His comedy shows consistently provide a weak ending to his comedy shows and Herring’s delivery was that of being overly wordy. He failed to end the night on a high after missing several opportunities and instead ended with an overlong paean to familial love, which, though touching, failed to hit the right note.

Kaczmarek On Whitney And DePuy

Whitney Cummings has come up with a new comedy series, “Whitney” that is to air on NBC on September 22, 2011. The show stars Cummings, who is also the co-creator and producer, and is based on the actress’ real-life experiences and comedy routines. It shows the lives of a happy unmarried couple surrounded by people who have contrasting insights about their relationship status.

Also part of the show are Chris D’Elia (Alex), Whitney’s partner; Zoe Lister-Jones (Lily), Dan O’Brien (Mark), Maulik Pancholy (Neal), Rhea Seehorn (Roxanne), Whitney and Alex’s close friends; and Jane Kaczmarek (Patti Morris), Whitney’s mother.

Jane Kaczmarek, who earned an Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors’ Guild nominations for her performance in Malcolm in the Middle, was not originally part of the show. Beverly D’Angelo first took the role of Whitney’s mother. The scenes for their pilot episode were reshot, now having Kaczmarek in it. She will appear on a recurring basis as the outspoken mother of Whitney who has been into several unsuccessful marriages. This is her comeback comedy role after she went into drama in TNT’s Raising the Bar.

Aside from the new role, Kaczmarek has also recently teamed up with DePuy Orthopedics Inc., the company who manufactured the ASR hip implants which is now undergoing a worldwide DePuy hip recall. The Anatomy of Movement Experience, the campaign where she partakes, is an “educational program that demonstrates the disabling effects of osteoarthritis and encourages those suffering with severe knee or hip pain to start a conversation with a doctor about their treatment options.” She endured severe hip pain for years before consulting a doctor and asked for treatment options.

“Looking back on the years of pain that I experienced, choosing to have my hips replaced was one of the best decisions I have ever made,” says Kaczmarek. On 2004, she went through 2 hip replacement procedures.“Following a rehabilitation program after my surgeries, within weeks I was back to walking long distances, climbing stairs and doing the things I wanted to do. I couldn’t believe I waited so long.”

Kaczmarek, 56, got married to Bradley Whitford on 1992 and was given 3children. Last year, the couple had a divorce.
