Here are three tips everyone should know to learn the guitar fast. You are going to have to actually learn the guitar. So where do you start?

Here are three easy tips to help get you started. Keep in mind though that these tips are not the only keys to success to learn the  guitar. There are many practices and methods to study, these are just a good starting point.

Without a doubt the most important guideline is to practice daily. Just pick up the guitar and try the new things you have learned over and over again. Without practice it will not matter how much theory you learn. So with that said, here are my three tips to enhancing your guitar playing aptitude.

First – Study the Guitar Chords

It’s a good idea to start out learning the names and positions of the guitar chords. Actually, chords are probably the best place to start. But too many people, I believe, stop there and fail to fully understand the construct of the chords. If you don’t know that a chord typically consists of a tonic and dominant, then you need to do more studying. For fun, two notes comprise power chords the first and the fifth.

You should also know that some chords include seconds, thirds, and sevenths. Recognizing these terms will allow you to construct chords and create some of your own. It is also important to be able to identify a chord.

However, simply memorizing some chord names and positions won’t cut it, you will not advance as a guitarist with just that knowledge; and it is not possible to learn all the chords because there are thousands of them.

Second – Study the Guitar Scales

After learning chord theory it won’t be necessary to know all the scales. Three scales in particular stand out the most. The major scale, minor scale, and the pentatonic scale should be known to all guitarists.

The major, minor, and pentatonic are the three big ones because they are the base of rock guitar. If you plan on playing blues you should also learn the blues scale. These scales and more can easily be found online, a great resource for learning to play the guitar.

Third – Finding the Right Balance

This last guideline is to find the right balance between having some fun playing your guitar and setting aside time for studying theory. But if you spend all your time trying to have fun you will not progress, and if you spend all your time studying theory you will become bored with guitar.

Finding the balance between fun and study is my final tip to learn the guitar, but I can’t tell you what that balance is, you have to find it for yourself. Make sure you are learning new stuff so that you can keep having fun while you learn the guitar.
