If you are ignorant of what nasal singing is, it is when the crooner permits too much air to flee into the naval cavity giving you a dreary sound like that of someone that sounds like a cartoon character.  What a lot of people do not know about this issue is that a small amount of air is actually supposed to escape into the nasal cavity while singing. 

In fact the higher you go, the larger volume of air that should be released into the naval cavity.  The hard part is regulating how much.  How does to much air get up into the nasal hole you ask?  Typically it is often because the tongue or tension in the throat is obstructing the entrance from the throat to mouth.  Without the usually escape route the pressure must be released someplace else. 

The simplest way to test to see if this is a difficulty for you is to use a test that I initially heard about from Roger Love, a celebrity vocal coach out in L.A.  Who actually knows his stuff.  Count to ten and after you get to the number five pinch your nose shut for the rest of the count.  You may be stunned to learn you shouldn’t here much of a difference once you pinch your nose.  If you do, you are over nasal. 

The other nasal voice is caused by the complete opposite of the first problem, and that’s letting no air into the nasal cavity.  This would give a speaker or frontman the sound of somebody with a cold.  This sound isn’t as common in folks without a cold.  The explanation why this often occurs is the power of the brain.  The brain keeps a running log of what sounds you make and tries to keep you voice as regular as practical.  Sadly, when a person has a cold for a couple of weeks the brain can begin to believe that this is your standard sound.  The sound will stay long after the cold is gone. 

Although it isn’t as extreme as when you had the cold, it can have an impact on your tone.  Listen to you voice recorded will help you forestall or fix these issues.  Using exercises to practice control your tone, inflection, and air flow, will remind your grey matter that you are in charge of your voice.

So, you have taken piano lessons for years but you can not play on your own. 
You most likely know the scales and can read off music sheets, but you can’t just take a seat at the piano and make music.
