In order to give you the best possible start on your journey to becoming a guitar god, I will share with you the following snippets of advice, which I hope you’ll find useful.
- Ensure Your Strings Are Correctly Fitted – When learning how to play electric guitar, you will start performing certain actions such as bending strings. In order for this to be possible, your strings must be fitted correctly. If they are not, your guitar can suddenly and annoyingly drop into and out of tune during your songs.
- Know YOUR Guitar – Your guitar will be different than any other electric guitar so practice with it regularly and don’t switch around. You need to know your specific volume and tone controllers and how to play certain parts of certain songs and solos with your specific instrument.
- Mute Unwanted Strings – It is crucial that you master the art of muting unused string when you are playing the electric guitar. Any noise from unwanted string will be amplified, and when you crank up the volume, it will sound horrible. You have to be able to stop unwanted strings from vibrating by carefully muting them as you play. One effective way of doing this is to rest the palm of your picking hand lightly on the strings just enough to stop them ringing.
- Scales and Licks – To play electric guitar well you should learn as many scales as possible, as well as some licks which incorporate them. You need to know the scale notes and how they interact to replicate the sound you have in your mind at any given time.
- Work On Your Vibrato And String Bending Technique – Two technique that it is vital to learn are binding strings, and adding vibrato to notes. Combining these techniques properly will enable you to play some very cool sounding things on the guitar. You’ll quickly learn these concepts, but will spend years if not your whole life mastering them.
