5 Ultimate Donts Of Creating Glamour Images Composition
Every artist, from a total beginner to a seasoned guru, realizes that a model is always the main character and the most important element of Glamour Photography. Depending on her psychological condition and comfort, a photograph can be saved or totally spoiled.
However, this also leaves us with a dozen more vital questions that photographers can and must influence in order to succeed. All of us can get those wrong and as a result – end up with some crappy pictures. What I want to concentrate on are the questions of composition (and light, as an integral part of it), atmosphere and posture.
Fortunately, there are no strict guidelines for you to stick to – your creativity and artistic intuition are the only two factors that can bind you or set your spirit soaring. Regarding the former criterion, you may experiment as much as you like. Mentioning the intuition of and artist and the photographic taste, I must say that Glamour Images still have several reasonable don’ts to them – it’s not exactly an oppression of one’s creativity, but rather a tribute to aestheticism.
First
Always give some thorough thought to light matters. When I say “always”, I am literal. Light is of vital importance for your picture it creates mood, it puts emphasis upon key objects, it beautifies (or it doesn’t) your model. Like always, you are free to experiment, there is absolutely no “ultimate lighting pattern to follow”. You might want to hit the soft white light that is responsible for the majority of glamour pictures out there. Some photographers enjoy creating contrasting areas of light and shade to play with, some shoot in hi-key Again, your taste is the only reliable criterion here – so if you don’t like what you’ve done, then this piece is probably less worthy than others.
Second
As I wrote in the very beginning, your beauty pictures should be concentrated on the model rather than what surrounds her. This is exactly the reason why so many artists are doing great with nothing more than their model and a backdrop. I’m not calling you to become a minimalist, but always remember that you are shooting a girl, not just background – so let her stand out. Try not to put anything that appears glamorous within the frame – your photograph can well do with some sophisticated and tasteful items… or even without those. It happens that such tactics result in better outcome in the end.
Third
Mind both the colors and white balance. It would be nasty to shoot a goddess in the flesh just to end up with pictures of some greenish-purple girl, wouldn’t it? That is why you need to have your white balance adjusted (it is easily done with the help of your DSLR and a sheet of paper). However, if you have considered the 1st point and managed to compose some splendid lighting, this will hardly be an issue. You can afford to drift away from the rule I call “stick to natural colors” if you want to add a certain hue to the picture. In that case, go as far as your creativity takes you, but make it look artistic and beautiful, will you?
Fourth
Composition is one quite vital matter. Consider the rule of thirds, the height of your shooting position (unless you want to depict a Humpty-dumpty or an giraffe-like model) and other typical issues. If your intuition tells you to trash some particular rules for the sake of creating something special, you can easily try to. I mean, how many glamour photography masterpieces are out there that can fit into all the rules?
Fifth
This is probably the most important one. It is a downright no-brainer we all somehow miss out – always be imaginative and creative. What you consider a mistake or a delirious idea might send your artistic glamour image soaring to heaven of magnificence and beauty or may well strike it down to hell of banality and vulgarism. Unless you are daring enough to carry out those bemusements, you won’t find out what they are. There are no rock-solid rules for glamour photography, which is the greatest of its strengths!
