The History Of The Gaming Industry In Atlantic City
Atlantic City, NJ is very well known for its world famous casinos. Actually, years ago, it was the gaming industry that boosted the flagging tourism here. At present, however, it is not just the gambling establishments that make this city a worthwhile place to go for your getaway. As this AJC report reveals, with the many places of interest that Atlantic City provides, it has now grow to be one of the most favorite vacation spots for non-gamblers too. Yet still, many travelers know this city best as a gamblers’ location.
Why Gambling was Legalized in Atlantic City?
After the mid 1850s, Atlantic City received quite a reputation as a fantastic seaside holiday spot. It was tactically located near some important business hubs and had a good system of rail transport that was quite affordable also. Many flocked to Atlantic City during this time to escape the heat in other places across the country. But, during the 1950’s, traveling by air was no longer excessively expensive. As more and more people started to travel by planes, picturesque destinations like Florida or the Caribbean were no longer out of reach. These tropical areas soon started to eclipse the attractions of Atlantic City seaside resorts.
A Gamble that Paid Off
In 1976, voters took a unique measure to reinstate the fading appeal of their beloved city as a tourist spot. They permitted legalized gambling within the borders of the Atlantic City- a ‘gamble’ that worked very well indeed. A dozen gambling establishments were operating here by 1988. In this year, the number of tourists to Atlantic City exceeded 30 million- a large leap forward from the 700,000 visitors recorded a decade before.
Casino Sight Seeing
You can take a leisurely walk along the 8 mile long Boardwalk to have a peek at the numerous casinos lined here. This popular boardwalk built in 1870, was the first boardwalk ever in the world. Initially, it was called the Boardman’s Walk, a length of boards which were positioned deliberately in order to avoid sand from getting tracked into hotels by guests. Currently, the Boardwalk remains the very backbone of this lively city and it leads to many of the sites you want to see here.
