Orange goes very well with blue and although it is just a secondary color and not a primary one it is very dominant. The secondary colors purple and green are also very dominant. To create orange the colors red and yellow are mixed together. Both of these are very warm, vibrant colors that bring life and power to any painting. Orange lends brightness to the painting and, why not? It is after all the product of both yellow and red mixed together. If the desired effect of your painting is one of peace and tranquility then using orange is not the best idea. Bright orange is extremely distracting and normal orange very energetic when viewed.
When painting flames or the sun, orange is your best bet when choose the perfect color. Using orange to paint the color of bodies being tanned by the sun is the best choice of color. Of course orange is a must when painting fruit or flowers but rarely does pure orange create a realistic image. The fruit orange was where the color orange got its name from.  
The spiritual meaning of orange is one of persistence and enduring with patience it brings to mind cooperation and the ability to get through situations. Both are very strong qualities. You need not look further than salmon, gold and peach to see that orange has so many strong values. Shades of orange have so many great qualities to them even though pure orange is a little harsh and abrupt. Any painting will be improved with the use of a little orange.

The pigments that create orange:

Probably the most popular pigment in orange is Cadmium but Copper and Azo are also used. Iron Oxide, earth pigments and Ochre are used to make the more subtle of the orange colors. Cadmium yellow is actually purchased and used to make variations of orange over the actual Cadmium orange that can be bought right from the tube.

The color orange and mixing:

As has been stated, mixing yellow and red will make orange. By adding more yellow your orange will lean more towards a yellowish orange color and by adding more red your orange color will be more reddish. For lighter types of oranges add more yellow and for more darker tones of orange add more red. Salmon and peach are hard colors to arrive at and artists say to use small mixtures and slowly add brown and white. Basically it takes a little patience to create the patient shades of orange.
