Hands you can play before the flop
The obvious bests would include AA, KK, QQ, and JJ. Other strong hands are AK suited, KQ suited, and usually including QJ suited.

Table Position
The first thing you must always do is take note of what your location is in relation to the dealer.

The further away from the deal, in an ordered basis, the more leeway you have when it comes to hands you can safely play. For example, pocket 10′s right after the Blinds players is generally not very safe. A pair of 10′s in such an early position is not a safe hand to play as anyone coming after you with Jacks, Queens, Kings or Aces is very likely to beat you. Overall, in early position it’s a very risky one.

However, if you are in later position, your pocket 10s type hand strengthens a little. You have been able to see activity from other players, and if say there have not been many calls and some folds then the 10s become a better % prospect and it may be worth risking it in the hope of a nice flop. If there is a lot of betting before you, even if only calling the big blind, chances are someone before you is holding something stronger, and it would be wisest to fold.

The same is applicable to more risky hands, should I be last or nearly last bet, and there haven’t been many calls and zero bets, I will play pocket 5′s – 10′s, or perhaps a 3,4 suited to 5,6 suited and hope for a straight or open ended straight on the flop.

The simple fact of poker is that any hand prior to the flop is a risk, I’ve lost pocket A’s many times, but these tips will hopefully help you to manage the risks and know when its safer to play those mediocre hands. Poker hands involve lots of probability so if you stay with the more likely ones then you should come out ahead over time.

Also, if there are lots of inexperienced players the pots may vary greatly, since these folks have a tendency to bet bigger and go all-in more. Watch at the very least 5 or 6 hands to find out if the lay reflects the difference in balances.

After checking names and balances, begin watching the play. Do many players ante up to see the flop or do they fold outright? Do some players often try to build a pot preflop? Unless you have a large bankroll it is best to avoid these games as they are often costly and can weed out those with smaller bankrolls.

Who seems to be regularly betting, and how aggressively? And even more importantly, when cards are shown try and record who had a legitimate opportunity to win the pot and who ought to have folded. You may be surprised at how often some players hang in with little if any chance. And particularly on small pot games, you aren’t likely to bluff anyone.

The flow of the game is extremely important, and you should understand it as much as possible before jumping in. This will save you many chips.
