In fact, you don’t even have to like what you see, which brings us back to my original question. Why in the world should we care about art history?

To put it simply, art in all forms – painting, sculpture, architecture – serves as a guardian of our tradition and culture. Pieces of art provide a record of the thoughts, opinions, emotions and efforts of groups of people all the way through history. Think about it, how would we actually become acquainted with our collective visual history… the rulers of our countries… the landscapes and scenery of ancient times or the faces of our ancestors and forefathers, if not for art history?

Art is a powerful animal. It connects us to the past as it binds us to one another even more in the present unifying us in a world of cultural diversity. Still not sold on the museum visits? That’s OK, because the Internet my friends, is the next best thing – unless of course there is a fabulous collection of paintings in your Great Grandmother’s hallway…
