You Photographed A Wedding With An Iphone?

A professional photographer would normally never shoot a wedding with an iPhone. However, the call to duty happened so fast and I really had no choice. My dear friend, Rabbi Loring Frank, in his desire to help everyone, offered my photography skills to a couple he was about to marry. He called me with no preparation time – everyone was downstairs and ready to begin the ceremony – right away.  I was at the office and had only my iPhone with me. It can be used as a last resort. You have no other option everything happened only due to the lack of preparation of the couple they might have forgot to hire a professional photographer.

Quality Photographs Using Iphone Camera

Now, don’t get me wrong – I love my iPhone! With my dozens of apps, it is a continual source of fun and creativity. But alas, the 3gs has an infinitesimal 3 MP camera – adequate for casual and artistic shooting but not to memorialize the most special day of a couple’s life and to create predictable, rich and balanced colors for detailed enlargements. Iphone can be used to shoot photos up to 3″ x 4″ or 4″ x 6″ but anything more than that will be difficult to handle and flaws will be visible in the prints. You can create bigger prints decently using the images from the iphone but there will be certain problems with the depth and lightings I have – many, as a matter of fact – but those were taken under my control and lighting. You simply do not put your credibility on the line and shoot a wedding with an iPhone. Or do you?

The wedding will be taking place under the chuppah and all the participants will be assembling there with the couple to create a homely atmosphere. Under most circumstances there is a sheet-like canopy which could diffuse the light. But this particular chuppah was created out of solid materials and the “roof” consisted of occasional cross bars of wood – allowing all the light to flow through unimpeded. Additionally, the cross bars created unwanted shadows!

Normal Weather Conditions May Not Be Sufficient for Iphones

The absolutely perfect weather conditions will be suitable for normal photography but not with iphones. The sun rays will be falling at an angle of 80 degree on a high noon at normal weather conditions. As an added complication, the bride, groom and rabbi were each dressed entirely in white. You will have to take lot of additional photos in this situation. The bright light can be a serious problem for low quality camera since proper view itself is not possible. You will not be able to see the LCD screen under this high light which will affect the frames and may not be able to crop properly. I had to trust my memory and intuition.

Having previously taken thousands of photos on my Iphone helped.   You should look for the vertical angle to take photos so that the framing can be done during the framing and editing process. As the bright sunlight caused squinting, I took 2 and 3 exposures of each pose. I took about 50 or 60 total photos. This is the case when the wedding ceremony is short.

Use of IPhone has become much prevalent over other photo shooting devices now a day, even during wedding photography learning,  it is seen that IPhone have taken a place over other such devices.
