Recently, I needed to choose a house warming present for some friends but we were completely out of      ideas. For a similar occasion they’d given me with a quaich, a Scottish symbol of eternal friendship, and so i believed I should get something more special than a card.

Our friends are an unique couple you just can’t classify easily.  They are  intelligent, witty and true individuals and because they were moving in into a new house, I felt a decorative subject could be perfect, but I was at a loss as to what to pick? My own, personal preference runs to things from the ancient world, like {Roman art} and Greek statues. I spent days in search of something remarkable, a gift that has a story, but Aphrodite didn’t seem appropriate, an Alexander bust was something we knew our friends already had and Hippocrates might have been ideal for a physician, but not for an IT professional and a lawyer. What I wanted was a little something the same but also, like my friends, very different.

My ultimate decision was a Modigliani sculpture, an elongated female head sculpture really different from the traditional figurines I had thought about and yet precisely the same. Established and primitive at the same time Modigliani sculpture is clearly inspired by African Masks and Polynesian sculpture, sleek and curved while also long and angular, it is the contradiction that makes the statues so unforgettable.

Modigliani’s tale is a sad one.
