HDTV – Some Things Everyone Should Understand
Plasma HDTV are very popular amongst the elite, sophisticated, home theater buffs, and the hardcore football fans as well. These are mostly found in the high definition end of the TV spectrum. They give much brighter pictures than normal TV sets. The black scenes can be seen as much blacker. You will not find ghosting here, implying that the response times are better.
The viewing angle is also much wider than normal LCD TV sets. So more people can sit in a wider circle around the TV and still enjoy the picture clearly. For LCD, if you stand on the side, either to the left or right, the picture will look washed out. This will not happen here.
Recent LCD technology is bringing the brightness, color rendering and response time closer to the plasma sets. However, they are still far from matching the deep black levels while the scene shows a moving picture. A moving scene will show a great many objects that have large differences in color. As an example a day scene with people and many buildings can be seen. While some portions of the picture would stay in the daylight, some could be in the shade. The people and also the buildings would show deeper black shades basing on the position whether in the shades or in the darker regions.
On LCD, because the cells are lit from the side, the black would not be that deep. On some cheap sets, the black might look like dark gray. On the plasma sets, this would be displayed with no problem at all.
The illumination technology utilized, makes the displays have much more brightness. The contrast ratio and the brightness are also very high. The contrast ratios here could be as much as one million is to one. This is to mean that a brightest point of the picture can be brighter than the lowest bright point by nearly one million times. Only few LCDs can come close to this.
With plasma technology, the main advantage being very big screens can be made, while using very thin materials. Since lighting of each pixel is done individually, the image produced is very bright. For this reason, the picture clarity is good from a wide angle.
The plasma HDTV, including the Panasonic VIERA 50 inch TV, has only one drawback and that is the high prices of the TVs. Since technology is progressing fast, and better techniques are being discovered, there is expectations that prices will fall. Anyhow, the old, cumbersome, huge CRT TV has its days numbered.
