The History Of Bingo
Bingo is a deviation of the popular game ‘lotto’ with the British National Lottery being a prime example of this. Its oldest routes track as far back as the 1500s from the Italian lotto game ‘Lo Giuoco Lotto Italia’. The phrase bingo originates from the 1920s Us game, ‘beano’. Beano was a carnival game including a dealer pulling a number of numbered disks from a cigar box. The phrase ‘beano’ occurred as a result of people would mark off the called numbers on their own card using beans. Similarly to bingo, gamers who [marked off] all of their numbers would call out “beano!”
The person credited with popularising the game is the American sales person, Edwin Lowe. He stumbled across the name ‘bingo’ completely by chance when he overheard a lady playing beano accidently call out “bingo!” instead. He decided that the name could be ideal for selling the game for the mainstream.
From here, Lowe went about mass producing the game enlisting assistance from maths professor, Carl Leffler. Leffler worked out numerous mathematical possibilities in the game and began to manufacture six thousand cards for Lowe’s bingo.
The pastime became very well-liked, primarily due to a quantity of priests seeking agreement to use the game as a way of raising funds in church. By 1934 there was around 10,000 bingo games played weekly across America.
With the arrival of the internet, the game came across another growth in reputation, introducing millions of players to online bingo. In 1996 a free of charge online bingo game was introduced under the name ‘Bingo Zone’. From here, increasingly more websites were created and the game stays just as popular today.
Online bingo is now probably one of the most popular online gambling games on the internet. Widely advertised across T.V. and Radio.
