Edible Blossoms, Passable Mothering Sunday Products
t’s almost Mother’s Day, and what gift can one give to say “thank you for carrying me for nine months in your body, going through labor, and raising me to be the person that I am today”? Typically, you send flowers, but one can always add a twist to the old bouquet.
Don’t throw it away, Mom
A nice big spray of carnations, sprinkled with some jasmine and chrysanthemum are an array of edible flowers that need not be thrown away after spending a day or two in the vase. Carnation petals are surprisingly sweet, and jasmine and chrysanthemum are great for flavoring up mom’s afternoon tea. It may take mom a bit of convincing, but why miss out on the good stuff in edible flowers? These are not only tasty, but they are nutritious, too!
There are edible flowers that don’t make good bouquets, but are great gift ideas, anyway. How about a small potted collection of garlic, leeks, and onions? It might take mama a certain amount of begging, nevertheless precisely why miss out on the good material within passable blooms. The same goes for the edible flowers in sage, marjoram, basil, and thyme. These would look good on that sunny side of the kitchen, near the window sill. Imagine it all lined up – fragrant herbs with small white, lavender, and yellow edible flowers. What a beauty!
If you have enough garden space, throw in a few of these edible flowers: the sunflower, the tuberous begonias (the hybrids are edible and almost fruity), a few daisies, maybe some roses. These will not only brighten up any lawn, but keep up the food supply, too. Throw in a couple of tulips and pansies. These should make mom’s garden bloom all year long with colorful and edible flowers.
What to Remember
If you do plan on trying edible flowers to make them a part of your mom’s bouquet, make sure that the edible flowers you are giving are, in fact, edible; they do not have any chemicals or pesticides – organic is a good way to go; and if she asks you to prepare them, you know how to. Or, it may be simpler to get these edible flowers already prepared the way they are supposed to be and just have a nice little meal with mom on that special day.
