Digital SLR cameras have brought pro quality photo equipment to everyday people. But it is important to remember that a pro quality camera is only one part of what it takes to take amazing pictures. You also have to know how to use your DSLR camera and that can be quite a lot more confusing with a DSLR camera than with a point and click.

And I think even more important than understanding all the technical stuff is having an artistic eye. A good sense of what will make a good photo. A good example of this kind of “good eye” can be seen when looking through these Beautiful Prints by one of the best photographers.

As far as which camera to buy I can recommend the Canon Rebel XTi Digital SLR. IIt is a great camera that has worked for me without any issues for approximately four years now. It is also rather cheap by the pricing standards of high quality cameras. Of course you should be warned that those standards are quite high, it is about $700 without a lens!

As you learn more about pro quality cameras you will find that the lens is very important. If you are used to point and click cameras then you are probably used to thinking that the amount of megapixels is the most important thing about a camera but that’s not true with DSLRs at all.

With DSLRs, the lens is what makes the largest difference in the quality of your photos. In reality the topic of lenses is too deep for me to cover in this article, I just want to make you aware of how important they are and that if you want to get serious about taking great photos you will have to look into the topic more deeply.

Like with all other skills, you will only become a expert photographer with plenty of studied practice. You have to read all about taking pictures and then you will need to take lots of pictures experiencing for yourself all of what you’ve found out!
